Vegan ideas
- To eat vegan and veggie you do not have to radically change your diet.
- You could try replacing meat in dishes like Bolognese, lasagne, shepherds pie, curry and chillies with Soya mince (dried or frozen), lentils, or beans.
- In stir fries use beans, or chick peas, tofu, cashew nuts, or Soya strips. (Which are now available I health shop freezers for stir fries)
- The frozen Soya strips are good in curries, as are chick peas, cashew nuts, butterbeans and lentils.
- Try nut roast as a meat alternative, these are very tasty and nutritious.
- You could choose Soya milk and Soya yogurt, which are very good and would cut your dairy intake.
- There are Vegan cheese alternatives.
- Choose a Vegan margarine like “Pure” sunflower, or Soya, which are also very good and available at the Co-op.
- For sandwiches try vegan sliced “meat” alternatives, cold nut roast with ketchup, or mustard (one of my favourites) fried tofu and houmous.
- There is a huge variety of frozen sausages, burgers etc available in health shop freezers.
- There are dried sausage and burger mixes available in health shops.
- Nuts are not just for Christmas, they are a valuable source of protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, oils and fibre.
Seeds like nuts are a very good source of protein. Try sunflower, or pumpkin seeds as a snack food, or try sprinkling sunflower seeds on your salads. - Always use sunflower, olive oil etc as an alternative to animal fats they are rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat.
- Use olive oil as a butter/margarine alternative on you bread and in sandwiches.
- Use your imagination when buying and preparing food.
Experiment with herbs and seasonings to give food more taste. - Try to buy food in season and buy locally where possible.
- By cutting out or reducing your consumption of animal products you will be helping to stop the appalling cruelty we inflict on our fellow beings and will reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by livestock production.
